FAQ

THE GAME

What is Reverie?
REVERIE TERMINAL is a pan-fandom sci-fi roleplay game set on an abandoned space station orbiting an unknown planet. It features elements of discovery and exploration, survival and horror, physical and mental trauma and some slice of life downtime. Characters wake up on Reverie Terminal, a disused space station that has fallen into disrepair, with no recollection of how they got there. It's up to them to either find out more, or find a way home.

How does my character end up on Reverie Terminal?
Were you asleep or were you unconscious? It doesn't matter. You don't know how you get there, and where, exactly, you are. Everywhere around you is metal, and there are no windows immediately available.
How characters came to be on the station remains a mystery, for the time being.

Where does my character live?
There are crew quarters on the station. They are extremely sparse - most just hold a bed, a wardrobe, a small bathroom/shower unit and a desk. However there are more than enough empty rooms for everyone.

Is there food? Water?
Yes. There is a kitchen by the mess hall on deck 2, fitted with fabricators, which are calibrated to provide sustenance for anyone on the station.

My character has special dietary needs.
The fabricators are calibrated for everyone on the station.

Is there a network?
Yes. Characters wake up next to a device playing a message on repeat. Investigating the device will show that it is connected to Reverie Network. The communication devices are essentially wrist-bands with both an in-laid display and a holographic one, akin to this. At this time, they only connect to the station network and only send messages (video/voice/text), though these messages can be both public, private or filtered to a given group. Private and filtered messages are encrypted, but not overly well, so it may be possible to hack these — or necessary to introduce better encryption.

The communicators come with a time and date function, but the date function is set to - and remains on - 01/01/1000. The time function, however, functions and runs on 24 hours in a military format. (0300hrs = 3am, 1500 = 3pm, etc.).

What happens if my character's device is destroyed (by accident or on purpose)?
If a character's device is destroyed, that primarily means the character is without a device. There are a couple of ways to deal with this, icly and oocly: firstly, there are terminals/stations around the space station that are connected to the network, so they could still access it if they wanted. Secondly, they could (with ooc permission from the other player, of course) steal a communicator from someone else or share one with another character. Thirdly, it is possible to get a new communicator through bonus ac.

Can a character be anonymous on the network?
Through Bonus AC, characters can request a second device, which would have its own ID, which would allow users to use the network anonymously - as if they were under a sock.

Can my character hack a device/ID?
If your character has the hacking capabilities, and the hacking is agreed upon OOCly, yes.

Where can my character go?
Nowhere, technically, is off limits. However, the station has been in disuse for a long time, and may have sustained some damage from outside elements, as well. Some areas are completely blocked off, and will require some work to open up, some simply appear locked for no clear reason.

Does my character have anything on them when they arrive?
They come to wearing a Reverie Terminal suit - basically, faded gray-green or grey-blue overalls. Along with it, they have a set of undergarments, as well as two extras in their quarters, and an extra suit. They also will be fitted with magnetic boots. If they so wish, characters can have a small token of home with them - something that can fit in their pocket.

Can my character take the station apart or destroy it?
When characters take apart parts of the station, such as the walls, they feel lethargic and weak or woozy. This affects powered and non-powered individuals, possibly to the point of fainting. If, however, they carefully and non-violently open a panel on a spot where that is possible (e.g. for maintenance, because there are screws, etc.), they will not suffer these effects. The effects occur primarily when it comes to violent and/or structural damage to the station.

THE MECHANICS

What kind of character can I play?
At present, we are accepting canon and original characters. Malleable protagonists may be apped in on a case by case basis, please contact the mods before apping. CRAU, canon OCs, and real/historical characters cannot app.
Two of the same character coming from different canons can be apped (ex: MCU!Tony and 616!Tony).

Does my character keep their powers?
As long as said powers can't interfere with the way the station works, or would be game-breaking, yes. Some powers may be nerfed for gameplay purposes.

What about characters who are injured or dying at their canon point?
Characters who are injured will retain that injury, though fatal injuries may suddenly appear less life-threatening than they were. Characters who are dead or dying at their canon point will be pulled from (just) before their death.

Is there an age cap?
We ask that players be 18+, and that characters be 16+, as this game deals with horror elements, as well as being sex-friendly.

My character isn't humanoid, can they stay that way?
That is up to you. Non-humanoid characters can be humanized, or stay as they are. We only ask that you state and explain your preference in your application.

What can I expect from the game's tone?
Reverie Terminal deals with themes of horror and survival as well as exploration. This means that there will be times when plots and mod-posted logs contain elements that are physically, mentally or emotionally disturbing or distressing for characters, from hallucination to gore to body horror. No such elements will be mandatory to play, but they will be part of the game's tone. Heavier plot elements will be off-set with downtime to give the opportunity for CR to settle and build.

Is there anything that's off limits?
The game deals with horror elements and is sex-friendly, so the range of playable themes is wide. That said, noncon is off limits in game. Additionally, we ask that all threads dealing with elements that may be disturbing for others as well as any sexual content is clearly marked as such.

How many characters can I have in game?
For now, two per players. However, a third slot can be unlocked through AC bonus points.

Speaking of AC, what is it?
Reverie works on a points-based system. No need to make sure a thread if 10 comments or longer, you can tally up all of the comments you've made throughout the month and submit them for AC. Points are distributed thusly:
Open log = 20 points
Open top level on an event log = 20 points
Open network post = 20 points
Log comment = 15 points
Network comment = 10 points.

Minimum AC is 200 points.

What if I have a lot more than 200 points?
You can submit your extra points for bonus AC! Bonus AC can be accumulated over time and allows you to unlocks goodies for your character, like extra food packs, weapons, ammo, or an extra character slot, while we are not at game cap. More explanation here.

What if I have less than 200 points?
You can request a strike before or during the AC period by contacting the mod team. Players cannot take two strikes in a row, and cannot take a strike for the AC period following a hiatus. They also cannot request a hiatus after a strike. To clear a strike, you'll need 300 points in the next AC period.

Will there be AC warning lists?
No.

What if I forgot to fill out AC?
If a player doesn't respond to AC, isn't on hiatus, and hasn't requested a strike before or during the AC period, they will be automatically swept out of the game.

What is the AC period?
AC opens on the 1st of every month and runs until the end of 7th. The game runs on UTC.

Can I re-app after being swept?
Yes. If you are swept, you are welcome to reapply, subject to the availability of app slots in light of the game cap. However, to pass AC on the next AC check, you will need 300 points.

Can I take a hiatus?
Of course! If you have passed the previous AC check, you can hiatus over the length of an AC period (= one month), by posting on this page. Should you need extenuating circumstances and/or an extension, please do contact the mods.

What is the game cap?
At present, the game is capped at 100 characters, subject to being revisited in the future.

Is there a canon cap?
Yes. Cast cap is 10 characters. Franchises are considered as single canons, so all MCU movies would be one canon for the sake of this cap, as would all DCTV shows.

What is the app schedule?
Apps are always open; there are no reserves.

Are app challenges allowed?
No.

How long do I have to wait to app from a new canon?
As apps are always open, we ask for a wait of one (1) month after a movie comes out (US release), and one (1) week after the airing of a new TV show episode before apping a character from a new canon/episode.

How quickly do you reply to apps?
We aim to reply to any application within a week.

How quickly do you reply to questions?
We aim to reply to any question within a week, depending on the complexity of it.

Can I canon update?
Yes, this is now possible.

Can my character die?
Yes. However, death means little to Reverie Terminal. Should your character die, they will be brought back — how? No one knows (yet). However, every time a character dies and is brought back to life, characters lose a little... something. For some, it's a limb. For others, it's memories, senses, or even their social skills.

How long does that loss last?
That is up to you. It can be permanent, but it can also only last a few days.

When characters die, what happens to them? How long is it before they revive? Do they wake up where they died, or are they somewhere else?
It may take between a second to several minutes for characters to revive, depending on the severity of injuries. They wake up where they died.

Greetings! I'm following up here with a question asked on plurk, about whether an AI lacking a body would find a station-wide system to install in. Previously I was told the station had an internal communications system that might work.

Regarding this system: does it include cameras, monitors, or other visual relays, or is it strictly audio? How extensive is it? Similarly, are there any other systems an AI could access, or that a programmer could patch him into? I'm not asking after any secrets you're not looking to infodrop, but would appreciate some structure regarding how the character might engage with others, or with plots. (Could he turn on lights? Open doors? Network with other hypothetical AI? Perform medical scans? Access station logs? What exists, and what would he be locked out of?)

Also regarding his nature as a not-remotely-humanoid: would he appear with a communicator and jumpsuit, or not? I hoped to have him warp through in a damaged console from his own facility, which would naturally lack a way to operate the comms device (or a body to wear clothes). In theory, the communicator could be patched into his hardware, and I'd be absolutely up for making that a CR project. But if the mysterious kidnappers would do something else instead, that's fine by me.

Thanks for putting up with my weird-case questions! Your game looks awesome, and I'm very excited to see how it goes.

Hi! I am thinking of apping this guy who is canonly blind, and was wondering if there would be any accommodations for that kind of thing--screenreaders on the communicators, braille on the room labels, etc.

And for my second question, I'm gonna make it highlight to read because it contains spoilers for 999 (which is eight years old at this point but it is a mystery game and I'd hate to think I spoiled anybody): Snake's left arm is also a lifelike prosthetic that can be crushed without harming him if need be. Would this come along with him when he arrived or would he have make do without? (end of question!)

Quick question, I hope I didn't just miss this anywhere!
Can we app characters who have already died? As in, we pull them from their death? If so, would there be any after effects or changes made to them?

Thanks!

Hello! I was wondering if you could give a little more information on the communication devices characters are issued. What do they look like, and do they have other functions aside from making video/voice/text messages?

Thanks for your time!

hi mods! question about the cast/franchise cap: are canons like netflix marvel and marvel tv (jessica jones/the punisher/defenders, agents of shield, inhumans) part of the MCU cap of 10? or will those have their own separate cap?

Hello, mods! I'd just like to ask about your stance on localizations.

The canon I plan on apping from is currently being translated officially, but the character I want to app only shows up in a part of the canon that has been unofficially (but completely!) translated. It will take about a year for said part to be officially localized.

Will I be able to app this character?

Hi mods!

If we app in and are accepted, is the TDM counted as canon for in-game events?

In the future, if there are TDMs, will those count towards activity if already in-game characters participate?

Thank you

Hello! Potential apper here.

I was thinking your character age limit. Would character who is really older than what they look like be allowed? To be more specific: I'm thinking of a vampire who has been around over 200 years but has an appearance of 14 year old.

With regards to the age limit, what about a character who is beneath it chronologically but is physiologically and (mostly) mentally, emotionally and experientially an adult. I'm thinking in terms of clones from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, who technically range in chronological age from 9 to about 13, depending on the character and canon point, but appear to be and functionally are in most ways that matter full grown men in their early to mid 20s.

Howdy, mods!

Outside of the first aid kits we could find in common areas, what (if anything) is available to find in the realm of medicine or medical supplies? Is there any one room aboard the ship that might just resemble a clinic, a small hospital bay/wing? Since it isn't in the setting pages I'm assuming no, but I do have a snoopy workaholic doctor and figure it wouldn't hurt to make sure.

Hey mods! I've got a few inquiries about the station.

1. Are rooms assigned somehow? It sounds on the setting page like housing is up for grabs, but then I saw "they have a set of undergarments, as well as two extras in their quarters, and an extra suit" and that sounds like characters aren't just randomly scavenging for necessities that fit them.

2. Is there some kind of laundry room accessible?

3. Are there any supply closets or the like for things like toiletries? If they find such items somewhere, what's the ration situation? Or maybe there are endless dispensers in the bathrooms or something?

4. I'm guessing it's unlikely there are any air ducts or maintenance tunnels around large enough for a person to fit in, but how about access panels on the side of the doors characters are stuck on? Even if they're nonfunctional!

5. I saw that there's effectively no language barrier in-game, but is there a mechanic for that? Like what happens if characters intentionally switch to another language to try and have a private conversation?

6. Do the doors to crew quarters lock from either side?

7. Since the game is sex-friendly, is there any sort of contraception available?

Sorry for asking a million questions, thanks in advance. ♥

Hello! I have a couple of questions as well, and I'm sure I'll have a lot more when the intro goes up rip

You've mentioned that there are terminals/stations that connection to the network like the communicators do. Do either the terminals or the communicators have any other functions that can be accessed, or are they locked down super tightly? Can the terminals be physically tampered with or altered, or can panels be pried off, etc. so their hardware can be accessed?

Just wanted to run a question by y'all real quick!

Being a beastkin, Ren canonly experiences heats/ruts, though how often is unspecified. Normally I'd just pretend they don't occur, make them rare, or handwave them but as the game is sex-friendly, I wanted to leave a future possibility open if anything develops between him and another character.

Would it be possible for Ren to, say, find something that he can voluntarily take that prevents them (sort of along the lines of how the fabricator meets all dietary requirements)? Or would there be something associated with the way they're brought to the ship that interferes with them occurring?

Thanks!

Couple questions!

1) 9S is an android who's specialized in hacking. There's pretty much nothing he can't hack in canon. Does that give him the ability to hack anything particular on the ship? Of course for network stuff that's marked as hackable, I'll contact the players, etc etc. He can also subjugate stuff with his hacking.

2) HEY THAT WHOLE ANDROID THING, and since I saw other people asking smut questions. I usually play 9S like, you know...a Ken doll, even though "upgrades" are available in canon. Is that something he could possible regain down the line with AC points or something? I don't know if I WILL but hey, options.

'lo, mods! I saw the question up top about AIs that don't have bodies, but I have a character who had a body for most of her life before being....unceremoniously....de-bodied and reduced to an AI-like being existing in a VR environment, with an avatar resembling her real body. I'd like to pull them from that canonpoint because, weird body shit aside, it's the best one for having her not panic about her homeworld situation.

Can she have some kind of nanite-built body à la death mechanics, or is there another simple option? On my end I would be happiest to play her as a normal-ass human being tbh. Having given it some more thought, being incorporeal would be fun in its own way, it'd just require a different approach and I'd like to know what's possible to balance my options and what-all. If the AI life is the only option, it's no big.

The whole situation is tremendously fucky and anime - on top of all this shit, her old normal body was also terminally ill, like, "will die in a matter of days without very advanced treatment" ill - and if you want more details I can give them. They're....a lot, though

Hey mods, me again! Just one q this time.

How is time measured on the station? The intro log mentions "days" but how long is that and how do characters keep track? Is there a time and date function on the communicators, for example, and if so is it in terms they would recognize?

I was initially assuming the station's orbit is similar to the ISS, meaning it goes around so fast they can't use it to judge a "day", but is it geosynchronous so they could?

Thanks. ♥

Hey mods!

Couple questions:
- I've seen you've replied before that there are air vents and the likes. Are there also maintenance shafts? The kind that have proper maintenance doors, not just grating on top of them?
- if yes, are said doors locked? Can they be unlocked with the magic of brute strength/a wrench/some hacking?
- if yes, is there anything untoward in said shafts if characters were to go in and run around a bit?
